Reading Challenge

2023 Alwin Holland Reading Challenge

READING CHALLENGE DATES: Wednesday, January 4th until Monday, January 23th.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE:  Read!  Use the attached recording sheet to write down how many minutes your child reads (or listens to reading) at home.  In order to be eligible to win prizes, the completed recording sheet must be returned to your teacher on or before Monday, January 23th.

PRIZES AWARDED:

  • PRIZE FOR THE TOP TWO READERS IN EACH CLASS:  The two students in each class who have the highest total number of reading minutes will win a prize.
  • PARTICIPATION DRAWS IN EACH CLASS:  Every student who participates in the reading challenge will be entered into a draw to win prizes.  There will be two participation prizes awarded by random draw for each class.

TAKE A PICTURE OF YOUR CHILD READING:

Take a picture of your child reading and email it to anewth@prn.bc.ca.  The pictures will be printed off and hung on our “Look Who’s Reading” bulletin board in the hallway outside the library for all the students to see. When you submit a photo, be sure to include your child’s name/teacher in the subject line of the email.  One submission per child, please.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

    • What if my child is not yet reading independently?  They can still participate by listening to others read, reading together with someone else, rereading familiar/memorized books, etc.  If your child is participating in reading of any kind, either as the reader or as the listener, then it counts.
  • What kind of things can they read?  Your child can read fiction/nonfiction books, home reading books, graphic novels, comics, look & find books, magazines, newspapers, recipe books, books on tape, ebooks/audiobooks, etc.
  • Does my child have to read everyday?  They don’t have to but the more they read, the better.
  • What happens if the recording sheet is filled up?  Continue on the back or on a blank piece of paper.  When you return the recording sheet, be sure to include all of the pieces of paper that you used to record the reading information.
  • When do I return the recording sheet?  Return to classroom teacher by Monday, January 23th.
  • What kinds of prizes will there be?  Books, swag, canteen coupons, bookmarks, pencils/erasers, McDonald’s coupons, and more.
